Fall decorating just got so much more magical! As a mom of three energetic boys, I’m always looking for creative projects that combine our love of Halloween with a touch of whimsy.
This year, I discovered the most delightful trend that has my whole family excited: turning ordinary pumpkins into adorable fairy houses! These miniature dwellings bring such enchanting charm to our front porch and garden.
Creating a pumpkin fairy house is the perfect way to add a unique twist to your Halloween decorations while sparking imagination in your little ones. Whether you’re crafting with your kids or creating a stunning garden display, these ideas range from simple to elaborate, ensuring there’s something perfect for every skill level and time commitment. Let’s dive into these magical ideas that will transform your outdoor space into a fairy wonderland!
Classic Cottage Pumpkin Fairy House

The classic cottage style is where I started my pumpkin fairy house journey, and it remains my absolute favorite! This timeless design features a charming front door, tiny windows, and a cozy feel that looks like it came straight from a storybook. I used a medium-sized orange pumpkin as the base and carved out a small arched doorway on the front.
To create this look, start by cutting your door opening carefully with a small knife or pumpkin carving tools. My boys loved helping me arrange small twigs around the door frame to create a rustic wooden effect! We hot-glued moss around the base to look like overgrown grass, and added tiny pebbles to create a miniature pathway leading to the door.
For the windows, I simply painted small squares with yellow acrylic paint to give the illusion of glowing lights inside. You can also cut actual window openings and place a battery-operated tea light inside your pumpkin fairy house for a truly magical nighttime effect! We added a small wreath made from tiny dried flowers on the door, and my middle son insisted we needed a welcome mat, so we cut a small piece of burlap for that perfect finishing touch.
The beauty of this design is its versatility. You can make it as simple or detailed as you’d like, and it works beautifully with pumpkins of any size. This is definitely the perfect starter project if you’re new to pumpkin fairy houses!
Enchanted Forest Mushroom Village

This idea takes your pumpkin fairy house to the next level by creating an entire village scene! I absolutely fell in love with this concept because it gave each of my boys their own pumpkin to decorate. We used three pumpkins of varying sizes and transformed them into mushroom-shaped fairy dwellings that look like they belong in an enchanted forest.
To achieve the mushroom look, we painted the tops of the pumpkins in red and white spotted patterns, just like classic fairy tale toadstools. The boys had such a blast with this part! We used acrylic paint, which adheres beautifully to pumpkin skin. For the house portion, we kept the bottom of each pumpkin its natural orange color and carved small doors and circular windows.
The real magic happened when we arranged all three pumpkins together in our garden bed, surrounded by real mushrooms, fallen leaves, and small logs. We created a little fairy village scene complete with tiny wooden furniture made from twigs! I found miniature wooden benches and a small ladder at the craft store, which we positioned around the pumpkin fairy house cluster.
To tie everything together, we scattered fairy lights around the base of the pumpkins and wove them through the surrounding plants. At night, this display is absolutely breathtaking! The warm glow from inside the pumpkins combined with the twinkling lights creates such a magical atmosphere that even my skeptical oldest son admitted it was pretty cool.
Spooky-Sweet Haunted Fairy Manor

Who says fairy houses can’t be a little spooky? This pumpkin fairy house idea combines the whimsy of fairy gardens with classic Halloween vibes, and it’s been a huge hit with my boys who love anything creepy-crawly! We used a large, tall pumpkin to create a multi-story haunted manor that looks like it could house both fairies and friendly ghosts.
The key to this design is creating multiple levels of windows and doors to give the illusion of a tall, narrow manor house. We carved three sets of windows stacked vertically, each one slightly smaller than the one below to create perspective. For the door, we went with a Gothic arch shape and painted it black with silver hinges drawn on for detail.
Around the windows, we attached small pieces of black tulle to look like tattered curtains blowing in the breeze. My youngest thought this was hilarious and kept making ghost sounds while we worked! We also added tiny plastic bats hanging from small wires attached to the top of the pumpkin, and painted some spider webs in the corners with white puffy paint.
The finishing touches really brought this pumpkin fairy house to life! We placed small skeleton decorations around the base, added some Spanish moss for a spooky, abandoned look, and created a small graveyard scene with tiny cardboard tombstones. Despite the Halloween theme, it still maintains that magical fairy house charm, proving that fairies can enjoy spooky season too!
Woodland Gnome Home in a Pumpkin

This adorable twist on the pumpkin fairy house incorporates gnome elements for a cozy woodland feel! I discovered that gnomes and fairies make excellent neighbors, and this design has become a family favorite. We started with a slightly flattened pumpkin that had a natural stable base, perfect for our gnome dwelling.
The signature feature of this design is the cone-shaped roof we created using felt. I cut a large semicircle of red felt and formed it into a cone shape, securing it with hot glue and attaching it to the top of the pumpkin. This instantly gave our pumpkin fairy house that classic gnome home appearance! We added white felt dots to make it look like a mushroom cap, which the boys thought was adorable.
For the door, we went with a rounded wooden look by gluing small craft sticks vertically side by side, then cutting them into an arch shape. We painted them brown and added a tiny metal brad as a doorknob. The windows were created by pressing small circular cookie cutters into the pumpkin surface to make indentations, then painting them to look like window panes.
We surrounded our gnome pumpkin fairy house with natural woodland elements like pinecones, acorns, and small branches. I placed a miniature wooden wheelbarrow nearby filled with tiny pumpkins from the craft store, and we made a small garden patch using green moss and dried flowers. The whole scene looks like a gnome could actually live there, and my middle son keeps leaving tiny notes for the gnome residents!
Fairy Garden Castle Tower

Every fairy needs a castle, right? This elegant pumpkin fairy house design transforms a tall pumpkin into a majestic tower that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale kingdom! This project took a bit more time than the others, but the result was so spectacular that it was absolutely worth the effort.
We selected the tallest pumpkin we could find at the pumpkin patch for this project. The height is essential for creating that tower effect! We carved a large arched doorway at the base and several small window openings going up the sides in a spiral pattern. To make it look like stone, we used gray acrylic paint mixed with a bit of black to create a weathered stone texture all over the pumpkin surface.
The crowning glory of this pumpkin fairy house is literally the crown! We created castle battlements at the top using cardboard cut into a zigzag pattern, painted gray to match the tower, and secured it around the pumpkin’s stem. We also added small flags made from fabric scraps attached to toothpicks, which we stuck into the top. My boys each chose different colors for their flags, turning it into a fun family project!
To complete the castle scene, we positioned the tower on a raised platform made from stacked stones in our garden. We added a small drawbridge made from popsicle sticks leading to the door, and surrounded the base with a moat created using a shallow dish filled with blue-tinted water and small rocks. We even added tiny plastic swans floating in the moat! This elaborate pumpkin fairy house has become the centerpiece of our entire Halloween display.
Rustic Hobbit Hole Pumpkin House

Inspired by cozy underground dwellings, this pumpkin fairy house design creates the most charming hobbit-style home! This has been my personal favorite to create because it combines my love of fantasy with the natural beauty of fall. We used a wide, squat pumpkin that sits low to the ground for an authentic underground dwelling appearance.
The signature element is the round door, which I cut from a piece of thin wood and painted in a cheerful green color. We added tiny details like a brass doorknob made from a small bead and decorative hinges drawn with a gold paint pen. The door is attached with small hinges so it actually opens and closes, which my boys think is the coolest thing ever! They’re constantly opening it to peek inside our pumpkin fairy house.
We carved small circular windows on either side of the door and covered them with yellow tissue paper from the inside to create a warm, glowing effect when we place a light inside. The landscaping around this design is crucial! We covered the entire top and sides of the pumpkin with sheets of moss, making it look like the house is built into a grassy hillside. We left only the front exposed where the door and windows are located.
Small details make this pumpkin fairy house extra special. We added a tiny mailbox made from a painted wooden bead attached to a toothpick, created a small garden with miniature vegetables made from polymer clay, and even made a small bench from twigs where the fairy residents can sit and enjoy their garden. The pathway to the door is lined with tiny pebbles, and we planted small succulents around the base for a lived-in look!
Victorian Fairy Mansion

This elegant pumpkin fairy house design is perfect if you want to create something truly show-stopping! I went all out with this one for our front porch display, and it’s received so many compliments from neighbors. We used a large, perfectly round pumpkin as the base for this grand Victorian-style mansion.
The architecture is what makes this design special. We carved a large double-door entrance with an arched top, and I painted the doors white with gold handles and decorative details. Above the door, we created a small balcony using a piece of cardboard painted to match, with a tiny railing made from toothpicks. The windows are numerous and ornate, we carved six of them in symmetrical positions and added small pieces of lace behind them to look like fancy curtains!
For the Victorian details, we got creative with craft supplies. We used gold trim from the fabric store to create decorative molding around the doors and windows, attaching everything with hot glue. Small plastic gems were added as decorative accents, and we painted ornate designs around the windows using metallic paint pens. My oldest son, who usually thinks my crafts are too cutesy, actually helped with the painting and got really into making it look fancy!
The landscaping around this pumpkin fairy house is equally elegant. We created a formal garden setting with small boxwood clippings arranged in geometric patterns, tiny rose decorations along the pathway, and even a small fountain made from stacked stones with a battery-operated water feature. We added miniature Victorian-style furniture including a small iron bench and table set. At night, we illuminate it with warm white string lights, and it looks absolutely magical!
Whimsical Candy Cottage

This sweet design combines the magic of fairy houses with candy land charm, and my boys went absolutely crazy for it! This pumpkin fairy house looks good enough to eat, though of course it’s just decorated to look that way. We used a medium-sized pumpkin with a nice round shape for this sugary-sweet creation.
The transformation starts with paint! We covered the entire pumpkin in white acrylic paint to create a frosted gingerbread house effect. Once dry, we used puffy paint in various colors to create the look of icing dripping down the sides. The boys had so much fun with this part, squeezing the paint bottles to make colorful drips all around the pumpkin fairy house!
For the decorations, we raided the craft store for all things candy-themed. We hot-glued colorful pom-poms all over to look like gumdrops, added small peppermint candies (the plastic kind that won’t melt or attract bugs!), and created a door using overlapping popsicle sticks painted to look like candy canes. The windows are outlined with small beads in rainbow colors, and we added a roof accent using corrugated cardboard painted to look like a wafer cookie.
The pathway leading to this pumpkin fairy house is made from flat glass marbles that look like colorful candies, and we surrounded the base with additional candy-themed decorations. We created lollipop garden stakes using painted wooden circles on sticks, and added some cotton candy clouds made from pink cotton batting attached to small wire stems. This design is playful, colorful, and brings so much joy to everyone who sees it! It’s definitely the most kid-friendly design, and my boys are already planning next year’s candy cottage improvements.
